By becoming a CFSS Volunteer, you join an agency and its community partners dedicated to being supportive adults for 'At-Promise' youth. You can also share your talents, skills, and connections to the community by serving on the Board of Directors. Submit an application to become a Mentor or join our Board today!
Research is overwhelmingly clear; when youth have at least one responsible adult in their life, they are significantly more likely to improve their connection to school, become advocates, and develop critical thinking and decision making skills. Mentors are positive role models for youth. They do not replace parents or guardians; mentors guarantee youth have someone that cares about them, listens objectively, and encourages them to pursue their goals. Klamath County has an overwhelming number of youth impacted by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Mentors exemplify good character and inspire their mentee to do the same.
Mentoring with Citizens For Safe Schools
Our organization follows evidence-based standards for recruiting, screening, and training mentors in order to provide quality programming. All mentors undergo a complete state and national criminal background check, personal and/or employment reference checks, and must maintain a current driver’s license and auto insurance. A new Mentor orientation and basic training are provided and required. Kids in the Middle Mentors must be 18 or older, with preference for having a driver's license. Matches are expected to spend 1 hour a week together for at least 1 year. We are here to support you as much as possible through your mentoring journey!
Other Volunteer Opportunities
We recognize that becoming a mentor in the KIM program poses a significant time commitment that not everyone can accommodate, but we have plenty of other opportunities for volunteering that require much smaller time commitments!
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please fill out the application linked below! The application process is pretty much the same regardless of what you want to spend your time volunteering for- just let us know in the application which programs you're interested in getting involved with!
What do mentors and mentees do together?
Spending time with your mentee can include activities in the community such as hiking, bowling, going to the movies, shooting hoops, etc. The new Citizens Institute For Character (CIC), located downstairs from our administrative office, is opened to mentors and mentees, and is a safe place to hang out, play games, watch movies, work on homework, play board games, participate in planned weekly activities, and connect with community resources.
Does it cost me anything?
No. There is no charge to the mentor. Our programs provide cultural and educational activities, free movie and event passes, etc. Mentors are welcome to expend their own resources, though it is not required nor expected.
What is the time commitment?
Citizens for Safe Schools requires that KIM Mentors make at least a one-year commitment to their mentee. We ask that you meet once a week for an hour. It is up to you and your mentee to decide when and where you will meet. Other volunteer options, such as helping out in our Youth Center, are highly flexible in terms of time commitment!
