  • makes them feel like a better person
  • increases their patience
  • opens them up to new friendships
  • makes them feel more effective in other areas of their lives
  • teaches them new skills
  • improves their attitudes at work
  • gives them a fresh perspective on life

(the list of benefits to our mentors goes on and on.... Not to mention all the benefits to the kids they mentor!)

FAQ's about Mentoring

 "Kids in the Middle"
Our mentoring program is modeled on the best-practice prevention strategy of pairing young people one to one with a responsible adult for at least one year. Together they engage in activities of mutual interest, have fun and form a relationship built on trust. Our program goal is to help youth build resiliency, avoid antisocial behavior and plan for the future. As a member of Oregon Mentors, CFSS adheres to a strict set of quality assurance standards.  To learn more about how mentoring works visit The National Mentoring Partnership

Who are the Mentees?
Young people in the 4th-8th grades are referred to us primarily by school counselors. These kids are in the "middle" of some major life challenges at home, in school or dealing with peers. With some extra adult support, they could make the good choices necessary for their success.

You can be a Mentor!
Mentors are any responsible adult who can commit to spending one hour, once a week, for one year with a child. Mentors don't replace parents; they are a friend with wisdom, a skill, or perhaps just some free time and an open mind to share. Mentors undergo a criminal background check and they must attend an orientation and participate in periodic training. Mentors are given the full support of the Citizens for Safe Schools staff who are always available to help a mentor by listening to any challenges and offering advice.  Additionally, fun is the name of the game! We support our mentor/ mentee relationships by providing the mentors with passes for visits to sporting events, museums, national parks, and other culturally enriching experiences. We appreciate our mentors and give them resources to use during the time they spend with their mentee.
