Citizens for Safe Schools has been a member of the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition since January 2001. Citizens for Safe Schools works with other coalition members and a wide variety of partners promoting the six pillars of character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship) while also helping to reduce antisocial behavior in our schools.

2008 AYCA Winners

 AMERICAN YOUTH CHARACTER AWARDS
Each year in October, with support from local sponsor AmeriTitle, CFSS honors six area students between the ages of 10-18 solely for their strength of character. These scholarship awards are not given for high grades, athletic accomplishment or acts of heroism - though these factors may be involved. To nominate a youth, see your school principal or contact CFSS at 541-882-3198 American Youth Character Award Application

RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS
A major goal of CFSS is to support educators who want to weave character education or character building opportunities like service learning into the school day and into their curriculum. We provide small grants, consultation, curriculum advice and free resources. For additional ideas and support visit

CHARACTER BUILDER AWARDS
Each year CFSS recognizes a teacher or school program for their outstanding contribution to building socially, morally and ethically strong students. Recipients are awarded $500 dollars cash for their school or classroom and a "Character Builder Certificate." We want to acknowledge this group or individual with a passion for teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling good character and who contributes to building a framework for our community that honors the six pillars of character.
